Sharon – Childcare Provider

Just wanted to thank you for coming yesterday.  I heard nothing but great comments about your presentation and the materials.  I heard some things I didn’t know and I had been doing lots of research on this subject as a new grandma so was really happy to hear it.  I talked to the licensing manager and she was very excited about it as well.  Again, thanks for your time and efforts – they were very appreciated.

Illinois takes a leadership role in Safe Sleep Education

Pam Borchardt was the first to have an active role in working to prevent infant deaths in child care.  She has been working with Illinois Child Care Providers for 11 years.  She has worked with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) Childcare Licensing both as an independent professional and a member of the Licensing Work Group to improve the standards as well as train the licensing representatives who interact with the Child Care Providers who take care of infants.

Ms. Borchardt worked with Representative Emily McAsey and others to lobby for all Licensed Child Care Center and Family Child Care Homes to have mandatory SIDS/SUID risk reduction/Safe Sleep training.  That law was signed into law in July, 2011 and will become effective January 2012.  As of January 1, 2011, all prospective childcare providers in Illinois must have SIDS/SUID training in order to obtain their license.

Since 2000, Pam has trained nearly 70,000 child care providers.  She also co-authored, developed and presented the first Train the Trainer for Child Care Providers at the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) Conference in Atlanta, GA in 2000.  That training program was then adopted by the American Academy of Pediatrics for use.  Since then, Ms. Borchardt has become one of the nations expert trainers in this area.

As the former Executive Director of SIDS of Illinois, she also offered emotional support to any Illinois Child Care Providers who had experienced an infant death while in their care.

I am writing on behalf of Pam Borchardt, Borchardt Consulting and the workshop she just conducted at our center on March 1, 2012 entitled ‘Safe Sleep for Infants in Childcare’. Pam was on time, organized and extremely knowledgeable on the subject of SIDS, SUIDS, and how to provide safe sleep for infants to prevent them. She spoke to our group for two hours and kept everyone’s interest the entire time. She was exceedingly informative and managed to break the intrinsically difficult material down to a more understandable, conversation-style PowerPoint presentation by breaking subject up into parts to ensure that everyone understood each section of material she was covering. She also included a lot of pictures and gave a lot of examples which were a great help in really driving her point home. She answered everyone’s questions and was very friendly. With her credentials and her fantastic,  informative presentation I would definitely recommend Pam Borchardt and her ‘Safe Sleep for Infants in Childcare’ workshop for all childcare centers. Please contact me at (630)961-9966 if you have any further questions. - Amanda Rink, Academy Asst. Director

Thank you so much for teaching the SIDS class.  The day are home licensed applicants and providers who attended expressed very positive feedback, and were appreciative that you too the time to share your knowledge and experience with us all.  As a Licensing Represtative, I am grateful for the opportunity to update my own understanding of SIDS, and to help the providers obtain the new training required by the updated Licensing Standards. - Rebecca, DCFS

I had numerous people come up to me and tell me what an interesting, informative and down to earth presenter you were.  We don’t always get that caliber of trainers!  Thank you again, this is information that we can all take into the field. - Karen, DCFS
